When I lecture at B-Schools, I often challenge my students to question market myths. Am using the term myths as the caveats that should accompany sweeping claims are almost never made. Some of the more popular myths include: Equities are the best performing long term asset class. To buttress that claim, a chart is invariably presented by equity fund managers with the start point invariably being the lowest point of the BSE Sensex, quite often even before the infamous Harshad Mehta scam period.

In his role as Union Finance Minister, Palaniappan Chidambaram presided over the biggest bull run (2004-2007) the Indian bourses has hitherto witnessed. The real trigger for that rally, to my mind, was his decision to make long-term capital gains earned on listed equities tax-free.

Normally, there is a life-cycle for an IPO boom. In the early stages, one sees good companies with relatively underpriced IPOs, in the next stage, there are satisfactory companies will fully priced IPOs and in the final stage, there are weak companies with overpriced IPOs
