On Wednesday (03 February 2010), the Asian rice prices declined as the world's big producing countries started harvesting, stoking concerns of oversupply as buyers stayed on he sidelines expecting prices to drop further. The benchmark 100% B grade white rice declined to $580 per tonne from last week's $585 per tonne. In Vietnam, the rice prices declined as much as 5%, hurt by a combination of soft demand, rising supply and slow loading to key buyer the Philippines following a contamination scare. In Saigon Port, 5% broken rice declined to $450 per tonne, on a free-on-board basis, against last week's $475 per tonne. The 25% broken grade also declined to $430 per tonne from last week's $450-$455 per tonne.
