MUMBAI: Positive global cues saw the Sensex open with a positive gap at 17,389. After hitting a low of 17,373, the index moved up to a high of 17,486, an intra-day swing of over 110 points. The Sensex finally closed with a gain of 41 points (0.24%) at 17,401. The Nifty was up nine points at 5,188.
The BSE Metal index was up nearly 1%. Breadth was bullish - out of over 2,900 scrips traded, over 1,865 logged gains.
Reliance Infra gained nearly 3% at Rs 1,131. Hindalco was up nearly 3% at Rs 162. ICICI Bank, Bharti, Reliance, NTPC and L&T also closed with gains.
Wipro was down 2% at Rs 681. TCS, Infosys, Sun, DLF and ONGC also declined.
Sesa Goa was the most active counter on the BSE with a turnover of Rs 135 crore followed by Tata Steel (Rs 106 crore) and Suzlon (Rs 104 crore).
