MUMBAI: The Sensex opened on a negative note at 17,088 and dropped to a low of 17,054 in morning deals. Buying at lower levels saw the index move up to a high of 17,215 - an intra-day swing of 160 points. The Sensex finally closed with a gain of 70 points (0.41%) at 17,168. The Nifty was up 17 points at 5,133.
The BSE IT index was up 1%. Breadth was bearish - out of over 2,915 scrips traded, over 1,760 declined.
Sun Pharma gained 3% at Rs 1,691. Wipro was up over 2% at Rs 713. Sterlite, Bharti, TCS, Grasim, Infosys and Reliance also closed with gains.
HUL dropped over 4% to Rs 229. Hindalco, RCom, ACC and Hero Honda also declined.
Total market turnover (BSE+NSE) was over Rs 83,300 crore. Debutant Man Infra was the most active counter on the BSE with a turnover of Rs 594 crore followed by Texmo Pipes (Rs 304 crore) and ICICI Bank (Rs 64 crore).
